It was quite the week at Minneapolis North High. The school hosted the Middle School basketball championships, a girls’ game against a City Conference rival the following evening, and a boys’ game the next night.
Here is how the final three days of the week unfolded.
Wednesday Feb. 4:
The Minneapolis City Middle School boys’ and girls’ basketball championships were held during the evening before an enthusiastic crowd.
The boys’ game featured Folwell Performing Arts Magnet against Ann Sullivan Middle School. The girls’ contest between Susan B. Anthony Middle School and Sullivan followed.
In championship style, players were introduced as game officials met with team members in the middle of the court to discuss rules and expectations.
Following each contest, each student athlete was presented a first-place or runner-up medal. Sullivan took home first-place trophies for the boys and girls.
Thursday, Feb. 5:
Morgan Hill’s 28 points, including a couple of clutch baskets in the closing minutes, led Minneapolis South to a 70-63 victory over City Conference crosstown rival North in a girls’ basketball contest.
Lexus Hughes had 18 and Makayla Lemieux chipped in 10 for the victorious Tigers.
North, who got 22 points from Kiera Hunter, 18 from Niyma Heard, and 10 from Olivia Austin, tied the game at 60-60 with a couple of minutes left before South pulled away.
Friday, Feb. 6:
The South High boys basketball team made it a sweep, defeating North 85-74.
Payton Bowdry led the way with 19 points. Taron Myers added 16 while Johnny Turner and Kyle Lumber chipped in 15 apiece.
Tyler Johnson led North with 23 points. Jamil Jackson had 18 and Azerik Rodgers added 10.
South never trailed the entire game. North got to within two points late in the game but never got any closer.
It was quite a week indeed.
